Mahler Nine

Project type

Classical Concert

Date

22/02/2025

Location

Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow

Role

Studio Assistant (Placement)

For my next placement project, it was the Mahler Nine classical concert! This particular project was not being filled so we could focus entirely on our stage setup. The recording was being led by RSNO trainee audio engineer, Gabriel Smith for his own university portfolio. We were also joined by current Fife College student, Daniel for his first ever classical concert. We started off up on the grid as usual to sling microphones above the stage and audience. Once again we were utilising a Decca Tree and rear surround pair however, we were also suspending timpani, woodwind and outrigger microphones. We continued our setup down on the stage setting up microphones and routing multicores and XLR's to our main stagebox to be sent via DANTE to the control room. We recorded both rehearsal and the concert itself which spanned around an hour. Following the end of the concert, we began our teardown on stage and the grid to ensure we were finished in reasonable time. It was a fantastic project to be a part of, especially to help Gabriel with his own university portfolio and mentor and teach Daniel about RSNO practices, recording techniques and setup hacks.
