Role

Sound Assistant

This concert was my first opportunity working alongside the RSNO audio team as their sound assistant working alongside Sam McErlean, the RSNO's assistant audio engineer. We were involved in following a predesigned stage plan for microphones to record the entire orchestra. We had to ensure the height, distance and angle were perfect, while also setting the correct levels for the mix. We were hanging microphones from the ceiling to form a Decca Tree while also hanging an ORTF pair down to the correct height.
We made use of their impressive SSL Duality desk to set the correct levels and panning during the rehearsal. We made mid performance microphone changes and adjustments for soloists in the orchestra, I was also responsible for mixing a section of the performance.
The day finalised by tearing down our setups so the hall was ready for the next morning's performance. This was such an amazing experience, I learned a lot about full scale orchestra setups and how big an operation it is to run these amazing concerts!
